I've been pretty busy as always. But more busy in July and August it seems. We are finally in the month of September and let me tell you, I am so happy about cooler weather and getting out of the 100 plus degrees.
The scorching heat of July and August was my least favorite thing about summer here in Roseville. It means that I have to water my potted plants and all my other plants every day and sometimes even twice a day. Such as the life of a gardener. I do love all my plants! So, first came Tam Tam as he is the Star behind The Tamarind Man's Jam.
He was inspired by my late Grandfather who made yummy tamarind jams for us to eat while growing up in America. God bless him and may he rest in peace. His memory lives on in those who knew and loved him. And now we celebrate him through our yummy jams we share with the world. Tam Tam has become a wonderful character who warms all the hearts of people around the world with his jams and jingles.
Just like Grandpa. He continues to grow and evolve but always remains true to himself. He loves to sing jingles and eat sticky rice and tamarind jam. Nambhu is a rice field crab character that was inspired by the crab paste of our people the Tai Yuan of Northern Thailand once Kingdom of Lanna.
An old saying amongst Tai people (Tai not Thai) is we called each other by fun loving nick names to describe who we were and what our sauce was. For example, we would say, "Kalom Nambhu, Lue Tua Naow, and Lao Padaek". Meaning, Kalom (Yuan) people ate Nambhu which is crab paste, Lue people ate Tua Naow which is fermented soy bean paste, and Lao people ate Padaek which is fermented fish.
It's the oldest fun loving saying that I know. All my other friends and family of Tai people would say this to one another as to represent our heritage sauce. I think it is pretty fun and loving and a good way to learn about other people and their food. And so the story about Nambhu goes like this: Once upon a time in the land of a million rice fields called, Kingdom of Lan Na, there lived a rice field crab named Nambhu....
